Despina Theodosiou, President of WISTA International and CEO of TOTOTHEO Maritime, talks about the achievement and opportunities available to women worldwide who work in the shipping industry. We have created together, a dynamic global network supporting women in the maritime industry and our aim is to continuously highlight our important role. WISTA won the 2017 SAFETY4SEA Sustainability Award for encouraging the participation of women in shipping. The human element has always been, almost by definition, a big theme for us. We promote diversity, engagement, education, growing capacity in our industry. This will continue, as we cannot become complacent. The maritime industry needs more women, particularly in leadership roles. Empowering women boosts thriving economies, stimulates growth and reaps benefits for the global maritime community. However, if women are to be fully included in the maritime industry, we should create a community of experienced women participating in various areas within our sector. WISTA in the future will become more involved in the discussion on technology and innovation. Our sector is faced with new realities due to the fast-technological developments and WISTA should be a part of the discussion. We are at a point where our industry is modernized and we, as a forward-thinking organization should encompass this change and make it our own. Formed in 1974, the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA International) is a global organisation connecting female executives and decision makers around the world. WISTA International serves as a connector for its network of more than 3,000 female professionals from all sectors of the maritime industry. More than 40 countries support a National WISTA Association (NWA), each of which in turn is a member of and is guided by WISTA International. NWAs provide in-country and regional networking, business and skill building opportunities, corporate visibility, and also facilitate relationships within the industry. Despina won the titles of “Top Professional” and “Cyprus Business Woman of the Year 2015” at the 9th National Cyprus Business Woman of the Year Awards 2015.
