Monica Damania, Ocean Product Manager – Maharashtra & Gujarat at Forin Container Line (Skyways Group) takes us on a journey of her growth in the industry and how, with the support of her peers and friends at WISTA, she took this revolutionary road. I began my career with M/s. James Mackintosh in 1996 as Customer Service Executive where I handled a customer service profile in Exports. My tasks included issuing D/o till cargo is delivered to Consignee. I truly enjoyed learning about shipping through this company. I had great colleagues and bosses who made me ready to move for next level in Industry. I went on to join great companies where I held positions such as MCC (Multi City Consolidation – Head & Nomination Desk). I have learned a lot about logistics down the road where I have even worked with International Offices. As the years went on, I became a good leader and became even stronger and confident in my work. My bosses and colleagues could vouch for my ability to get things done, regardless of the department I handled. While I was the Regional Head (West) at Continental Carriers, I was given the responsibility of handling Western Region Cs, Ops and overseas networking, and taking it onto the next level. I was given the opportunity of making International Visit which helped me get more clarity on networking area and see how the women in our industry are growing. In the same way, I discovered WISTA in 2013 when they launched in India through the EXIM newsletter. I remember an ad being placed where any woman of industry those who wished to be a part of WISTA and have access to a great platform for networking and learning more and more about industry. I registered immediately and am now a proud WISTA member. Sanjam Gupta, President of WISTA, has always been so supportive of me and has been there for me when I needed it. Now, at Forin Container Line, I have a challenging profile where Mr. Tarun Sharma and Mr. Rajiv have given me a great opportunity and have trusted my ability and experience in this Industry. MANSA (Mumbai and Nhava Sheva Shipping Association) has recognised me by awarding me with “Best Lady Employee & Industry- 2017”. I am grateful to the two people who I see as my well-wishers, my close Pal Ms. Sanjam Gupta & Mr. Oorvez Batty who have been my support in my thick and thin. Being a single mother, I am grateful for all the support I have received from the industry and at home. It is because of them that I was able to be where I am today. I have become stronger and can deal with any challenges in life without any fear, I thank God for showing me the right way and approach towards life at right time. I have grown and my experience has helped me make my daughter Isha more independent, strong and a good human being. I am independent and successful because of all the efforts I made to make myself strong and both fight the world and walk along with the world as an Independent woman. I know I have a lot more to achieve, but with the support of the industry, I know I can do anything. I have been a good leader where I know that I can take my team to great success and heights. My journey, my battles and many more is still own and will go on. I look forward to new day, new beginnings, a new world of networking and most important being “ME”. IT TOOK MANY PAINFUL YEARS TO DISCOVER MY OWN SELF-WORTH THAT ALLOWED ME TO DEVELOP THE NECESSARY CONFIDENCE FOR BEING A STRONG AND INDEPENDENT WOMAN. “ONE DAY OR DAY ONE ..... YOU DECIDE” Monica has a positive attitude and sets high targets for herself. An active WISTA member, she used the platform to network and increase visibility.
