Latest Updates On Ocean Shipping - 22 July 2019
Last week in Ocean Shipping across the globe (15 - 21 July). Analysts At Alphaliner Have Detected The Rise Of A Two-Tier Market The analysts associated with the renowned Alphaliner have pinpointed the growth of a two-tier market while formulating the half-year review of the container shipping industry. This two-tier market depends mostly on the involvement of well-established, large-sized boxships and struggling small-sized vessels. During the July month of 2019, the total capacity of the cellular containership fleet had successfully reached the mark of 22.7m teu that was recorded at a growth of 3.7 per cent on a year-on-year basis. The gradual yet noticeable decrease in the overall demand growth has taken a huge toll on the entire performance of the containership market, as has been highlighted in the mid-year report as released by the Alphaliner. According to the recent developments in the field of container shipping, the charter rate index has suffered a decline by 14 per cent year-on-year in case of the Alphaliner. If we focus on the findings in the recent report published, it is now certain that there has been a steady advent of the two-tier market since the onset of 2019. As a direct consequence, the relatively smaller ships have now lost the importance while the bigger ones (featuring sizes above 6,000 teus) are promoting ever-increasing rates. Major Shipping Companies Collaborate To Launch A New India-Europe Service A few of the well-established and well-known names in the maritime arena, such as The Ocean Network Express (ONE), Yang Ming Line, Hapag-Llyod and Cosco Shipping, have joined hands to create a new India-Europe service that will cater to the demands of the markets in the Mediterranean, the North Europe and South-East India. It has been declared that the two services as denoted by the Indian Ocean Service 3 or IO3 (provided by ONE) and South-East India- Europe Express or IEX (provided by Hapag-Lloyd) will operate between India, the Middle East and Europe- Piraeus, and also include Antwerp, Hamburg, Le Havre, Rotterdam, and London Gateway. The global trade is all set to welcome the IEX service that is regarded as the first full-time, direct service from Southeast India to Europe. The newly launched India-Europe service will involve the operations of nine 6,500 teu vessels that will work around a 63-day fixed rotation. India’s New Multimodal Terminal Is Currently Under Construction At Sahibganj Our country is all set to welcome an advanced multimodal terminal hopefully in August, the first phase of which is currently being built across the River Ganga at the Sahibganj region in Jharkhand. The Sahibganj Multimodal Terminal (MMT) is a recipe for undoubted success owing to its convenient location in the logistic chain of the Eastern Transport Corridor of India. All the necessary details regarding the upcoming project have been confirmed by India’s Minister of State for Shipping and Minister for Chemical and Fertilizers. The new terminal is situated close to both the Sakrigali railway station and NH-80 and will certainly go a long way in enhancing the trading scenario of the region. This will, in turn, serve as a great boost to the entire cargo movement and lead to socio-economic and industrial development. A Trial Shipment Of Mangoes Was Exported From North India To Europe A trial shipment consisting of no less than 10 tonnes of fresh mangoes were shipped all the way to Europe from North India in an attempt to boost the mango trade between the two regions. The exported mangoes are sourced from the local, North Indian variety called the Chausa. And were packed off from the Uttar Pradesh Mandi Parishad Pack House in Lucknow. This major shipment was funded by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The transportation of mangoes from Uttar Pradesh to Italy would cost much lesser than air freight and hence, this is a very practical and profitable decision. DP World San Antonio Becomes The First Chile Terminal To Opt For Reefer Monitoring In a brilliant attempt to keep up in pace with the new-age developments in the maritime industry, the DP World San Antonio has shot into instant fame by becoming the first-ever terminal in Chile to introduce the latest version of the Reefer Runner by Identec Solutions. In fact, it is also being termed as the third terminal in South America to have opted for advanced reefer monitoring systems for improving its operations. Built way back in 2011, this high-tech terminal has earned a lot of popularity by becoming the largest, multipurpose port terminals in the country’s shipping scene. The strategic location of the port has definitely triggered significant growth in its exporting and importing services.
