Venta Maersk Finished its Arctic Voyage and Docked at Bremerhaven Venta Maersk, the Maersk boxship, has recently anchored at the Bremerhaven Port after it completed its Arctic chapter. The Venta Maersk has received a lot of appreciation by becoming the first containership to journey across the Northern Sea Route. The 3,600 teu newbuild vessel had commenced its journey from the Vladivostok Port on 23rd August. Reportedly, the Maersk containership had cleverly utilized the ultra-low Sulphur fuel for this Arctic voyage. The purpose of this journey was purely scientific as the vessel thoroughly explored the Arctic region and picked up all the relevant data. The derived information played an important role to determine whether the Northern Sea Route is suitable as a substitute for the traditional Asia-Europe route via the Suez Canal. If we go back in time, Venta Maersk was delivered on 11th July 2018 and it is the fourth vessel to belong to the collection of seven sister vessels. It is important to mention that the Baltic feeder vessels launched by Maersk have carved out a niche for themselves in the marine industry, by virtue of being some of the largest ice-class ships in the entire world. These vessels are specially designed to perform in freezing waters (as low as -25 degrees Celsius), which require such expert ice-class vessels to smoothly operate throughout the year. The Port of San Diego Faced a Nasty Ransomware Cyber-Attack Unfortunately, the port of San Diego had to undergo a ransomware cyber-attack that devastated the information technology systems inside the agency. all the computers were locked up due to the security breach and the users were asked to pay a hefty ransom to allow access again. The CEO of the Port of San Diego, Mr. Randa Coniglio, has not neglected the severity of this cybersecurity incident and has taken the right measures to put things back in action. In a recent interview, she has stated that the port staff had already shut down the majority of the systems once they realized they were under attack. In order to probe into the incident and deal with it in a stringent manner, the Port of San Diego has joined hands with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). One good thing is that the port has declared the incident to be an administrative problem and is now able to continue with its normal operations in spite of the tragedy. Since the port is functioning without any hassle, it continues to establish close communication and coordination with the US Coast Guard. CSL Will Be in Charge of Ship Repair Operations at Port Blair The Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and the Andaman and Nicobar Administration have signed a MoU that indicates that CSL will undertake the ‘Operation and Maintenance of the Marine Dry-Dock’ at Port Blair. This step was taken in order to enhance the operational efficiency of the Marine Dockyard and also, to make sure that a faster turnaround was possible for vessels and seamless operations. It has been further decided that CSL will be responsible for constructing a Ship Repair Eco-System and supervise the augmentation and improvisation of the Marine Dockyard at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On top of that, CSL will preside over the Skill Development and Training programs at the site. APL Won the Title for the Containership Operator of the Year It is the time for celebrations for APL because it won the ‘Containership Operator of the Year’ award at the Llyod’s List Asia Pacific Awards 2018 in September. APL was praised and congratulated for its operational brilliance, strong service network, commercial progress, and responsible environmental management. Mr. Nicolas Sartini, the Chief Executive Officer at APL, has commented that receiving this award means a lot to the APL team as it reflects the pioneering spirit of the organization. Mr. Sartini also highlighted the fact that APL has steadily expanded in Asia and has implemented several logistics management solutions to promote the customer-centric culture. The CEO hopes that with the distribution of their dynamic service network will allow clients to become more involved, which will ensure the efficient movement of cargo through differentiated propositions. Samskip Ensures That the Nor Lines Shortsea Service Network is Up-to-Date Samskip is currently occupied with altering the structure of the multi-purpose cargo and reefer services that connect the Baltic and the North Sea ports to Norway. These services are mainly controlled by the Nor Lines subsidiary and Samskip is hopeful that the restructuring will boost the frequency, capacity and lead to new port options, as well. The overhaul will be brought into action from October itself and will not only meet the growing demands for project cargo services but also will simultaneously increase the capacity.
