Maersk’s Regional Carrier Brands Will Be Integrated to Form SeaLand The famous AP Moller-Maersk Group is going through a transformative phase wherein the brands like MCC Transport, Seago Line and Damco, are going to take the hit. Maersk is aiming at emerging as global, integrated container transport and logistics company in the future and hence, it is implementing new changes within the organization. According to the information provided by the Danish organization in a recent press release, it has shared its future plans of combing the offerings for supply chain service and ocean products to allow an improved version of the end-to-end logistics solutions for cargo owners. From January 1 st onwards in 2019, Maersk Line’s Ocean Product and Damco’s Supply Chain Services will be combined and their value-added services will be sold under the Maersk name. Maersk believes that this will enhance the customer experience with not only a far more universal approach to a service offering, but also with lesser touchpoints. It has been decided that this integrated commercial company will be managed by Vincent Clerc (Chief Commercial Officer at Maersk) along with a management team, a sales team, a customer experience organization and a product organization. On the other hand, Klaus Rud Sejling (CEO of DAMCO) will operate as the Head of Maersk’s Logistics and Services Products. Launching on October 1 st of this year, Maersk’s regional carrier brands like the intra-European player Seago Line, intra-Asia line MCC Transport and the American Specialist SeaLand will join hands to form the SeaLand under Maersk. China Earns the Status of the Second Largest Shipowning Nation What with the rapid expansion of its fleet, China has finally replaced Japan as the second largest shipowning nation in the world. The list is still topped by Greece, which is maintaining its status as the largest nation in terms of shipowning. China has been performing steadily well in the past few years and it is being predicted there will be a surge after many containerships, giant ore carriers, tankers etc. are delivered to Chinese ship owners, this year itself. This will, of course, further enhance the capacity of the present Chinese fleet. Richard Scott (MD of the Bulk Shipping Analysis and Associate, China Centre (Maritime, Solvent University) highlighted the acceleration in the growth of the China-owned merchant ship fleet. Scott has also mentioned the 9% increase in the Chinese fleet back in 2017 and has reasons to believe that the annual growth in 2018 can result in similar figures. Scott has conducted an extensive research on the subject and says that substantial tonnage will be added once new vessels are delivered in the coming 2-3 years. Moreover, a considerable boost will happen after numerous vessels are utilized in long-haul international trades where China operates as cargo importer or exporter. “K” Line Will Follow All-of-the-Above Strategy for Fuel Sulphur Regulation Eizo Murakami, the President of “K” Line, has stated in an annual social responsibility report that the Japan-based organization will adopt an all-of-the-above strategy for the IMO 2020 Sulphur compliance. Murakami stressed the fact that the shipping company will use low-sulfur fuel, install new equipment like scrubbers for SOx removal and lastly, convert the fuel to LNG. Murakami also said that the company proceeds with the regulation on a ship-by-ship basis since they do not wish to limit themselves to only one measure. On top of that, “K” Line is making a positive effort to interact with its customers and finalize the best compliance strategy for each vessel and each route.
