CMA CGM Refuses to Give Up Pursuing Acquisition Targets After losing its chances with Hapag-Lloyd from Germany, the France-based CMA CGM still refused to give up and is constantly on the lookout for potential targets for acquisition. CMA CGM, the fourth largest shipping line in the world, had looked forward to striking a deal with Hapag-Llyod in July but it had failed miserably. Instead of agreeing to the proposed takeover, Hapag-Llyod condemned it strongly with the statement that Hapag-Llyod would rather take over CMA CGM any day. Even though all hopes were crushed, CMA CGM brushed aside the failure with a positive attitude and is still on the prowl for new targets. Rodolphe Saade, the CEO of CMA CGM, has confirmed that the French containerline is nowhere close to giving up, instead has started anew with fresh enthusiasm. In an interview with the Reuters, Saade has stated that the shipping industry is consolidating in future and so, there are high chances that the CMA CGM group will stumble upon new and better opportunities for acquisition. As per the records shown by Alphaliner, the total capacity of the CMA CGM group is around 2.64m teu. This idea was highlighted at the 4 th Cool Logistics Asia in Hong Kong, which was graced by the presence of top executives from the container trade industry. The participants at the renowned event talked about the implementation of new technologies that are proving to be a lot beneficial to the container sector. Everyone agreed that better returns are required to allow better investments in the long run. Gerry Yim, MD OF Hutchison Port Holdings Trust flagship terminal Hong Kong International Terminals (HIT), is of the opinion that the reefer is the most important area for the overall growth of the container sector. Yim also praised the optimum location and free port status of the Hong Kong port, which has achieved recognition as the global fruit express gateway to China. It is being predicted that China will gradually take over the US to become the best fresh fruit importer in the world. The digitization will be put to good use in the ordinary logistics needs of the normal containers. Also, Yim stressed on the fact that digitization will eventually enhance the reliability of the system, by increasing the information flow and integrating the supply chains. New techniques such as the remote reefer monitoring, track-and-trace solutions and electronic release orders (eRO) are useful in magnifying the visibility present in the supply chains. Read More V.O.
