Latest Updates On Ocean Shipping - 10 September 2018
Ocean Network Express (ONE) Prefers the Usage of Low-Sulphur Fuel The world-famous container shipping line from Japan, the Ocean Network Express or the ONE, has declared that it has chosen the usage of low-sulphur fuel oil as the best option, after a lot of research. The reason behind opting for this fuel type is the compliance with the IMO sulphur cap, which will commence from January 2020. Moreover, the ONE containerships are designed in such a way that no special modifications are required for the implementation of the low-sulphur compliant hybrid oil. Currently, this has been decided as the most realistic strategy that will ensure that ONE is completely compliant-ready by 2020. Not to mention, this fuel will also promote cost efficiency for the organization. The ONE has also stated that scrubber systems can be added to a few of their vessels if it is required in the long run. Since the construction of new scrubbers in the container vessels takes a long period of time (around 2-3 years) after the confirmation of order, it is difficult to get all the vessels ready by 2020. Similarly, it is believed that the task of adopting LNG-powered engines for the vessels, cannot be completed so soon. The ONE organization is further planning to evaluate the charter vessels with scrubber system, which will promote the expansion of compliant vessels in the fleet. CMA CGM Introduces New CLIMACTIVE Reefer Containers In accordance with the Asia Fruit Logistica held in Hong Kong this year, CMA CGM has decided to launch its most advanced technology called the CLIMACTIVE solution. The CLIMACTIVE technology is specially designed to enable the smooth transportation of highly sensitive fruits and vegetables in an active-controlled environment. The new CLIMACTIVE reefer containers will include a DAIKIN active-controlled atmosphere system, which will ensure that the sensitive commodities retain their complete freshness by the time they reach their destination. This can be achieved by the quickly reducing the oxygen level inside the vessel. The CLIMACTIVE solution is perfect for the highly sensitive food items (like the long transit time products, high added value items or organic products) that need high maintenance and special attention, because of their maturation time and biological specificities. Now, the introduction of this new technology will allow the businesses to optimize the competitive spirit by preserving the quality attributes of the different items, preventing the maturation procedure, and simultaneously extending the shelf life of the products. The businesses are even able to maintain the organic label of the food items and can boost expansion by exploring the possibilities of newer and farther destinations. Penna Suraksha Anchors Itself at the Penna Cement Terminal at the Cochin Port On 3 rd September, Penna Suraksha was the first vessel to arrive at the Q6 Berth of Ernakulam Wharf of Cochin Port. The vessel was carrying 25,000 tonnes of cement that were previously brought from the Krishnapatnam Port. As we are aware of, cement is a high-volume, low-value product that offers low-cost sea transport and therefore, it has achieved a game changer status in the field of logistics. The recent modal shift in the transportation of cement from road and rail to shipping is a big achievement towards encouraging the coastal shipping methods. The coastal shipping procedure is very cost-effective and employs eco-friendly logistics under the Sagarmala Programme of the Ministry of Shipping. CFS and Visakha Container Terminal Shows a Remarkable All-Round Performance As per the recent reports, the Visakha Container Terminal (VCT) belonging to the J.M. Baxi Group along with the associated facilities have delivered an amazing performance. The impressive growth was mainly recorded of the overall exports, which had shown an increase of 13 percent in the previous month. For this matter, various products like aluminum, chemicals, ferroalloys, steel, heavy minerals etc. have significantly contributed towards the success. In the case of imports, products like metals, chemicals, minerals, ores, machinery, refractories etc. have gained a lot of importance in the current scenario. On top of that, VCT has also reached the level of the highest ship productivity (SMPH) and crossed 100 moves per hour on the MV Varada (CCG service), which started its journey on 5 th September. The VCT team worked hard to ensure that the MV Varada vessel was smoothly turned around in a span of 24 hours. The VCT team was much appreciated for the careful planning, detailed organizing, and perfect coordination that allowed the hassle-free running of the complete vessel operations at the terminal The Shanghai Port Has Decided to Impose China’s Emissions Control Area Requirements on Vessels Considered as the busiest port in the whole shipping world, the Shanghai Port is all set to impose the country’s Emissions Control Area requirements on ships that transit through the port. According to the reports obtained by the Huatai Insurance, this requirement will be applicable to all the vessels that are operating, berthing or navigating in the Port, which does not include the vessels used for military purposes or fishing boats. As a part of the regulatory measure, a fuel sulphur limit will be soon imposed and become effective before the IMO 2020 fuel sulphur regulation.
