Maersk Advises Brazilian Shippers to Stop Overbooking Slots
Of recent, many exporters from Brazil are reserving more space than they actually require and that is creating a huge problem for others who need a slot, as well. Maersk has asked the Brazilian shippers to immediately stop the action of overbooking space as it is having adverse effects on the exports scenario. Since Brazil happens to be the largest country in South America, the consequences are becoming too difficult to handle.
Antonio Dominquez, the Director for East Coast South America in the Maersk organization, has clearly stated that these exporters are wasting valuable space that they do not require, which has unfortunately increased the costs too. On investigating the matter, Maersk has also discovered that a large cotton crop is another contributing factor to this problem of shrinking space in ships. Plus, there was a trucker strike at the beginning of 2018 that has been proved to be harmful for the local supply chains. The total exports through Brazilian ships owned by the Maersk have declined by 6% in the second quarter. As a probable solution, Maersk advises the shippers to charge the slots when they are reserved, similar to the airline companies.
