Latest Updates On Ocean Shipping - 27 August 2018
Here is what happened in Ocean Shipping between 20 – 26th August 2018. Venta Maersk Crosses the Northern Sea Route through Russian Arctic Waters The Venta Maersk becomes the first container vessel to cross the Northern Sea Route through the Russian Arctic waters. On 23 rd August, it started its journey from the Vladivostok Port and is now headed towards Europe. According to the information supplied by a spokesperson from the Maersk organization, the new 3,600 teu-sized is making the use of ultra-low sulphur fuel for the above-mentioned trial journey. The containership is well-equipped with a flexible fuel changeover arrangement, which is demonstrated by the fact that all the fuel tanks consist of two fueling and two transfer lines. Plus, there are spool pieces for the hassle-free changes between fuels. Stating its views on the subject, the Clean Arctic Alliance has highlighted the fact that the Maersk Line has been successful in taking a lead in the Arctic region and hopefully this will boost the trade of commercial goods throughout the world. The main focus is on utilizing renewable forms of propulsions to ensure the elimination of heavy fuel in shipping. The Clean Arctic Alliance has been campaigning against the consumption of heavy fuel oil in the Arctic region for many years now. The Venta Maersk is loaded with frozen fish and it has plans of travelling through the Bering Strait in September. The containership will visit the ports of Vladivostok Fish Port, Busan, Saint-Petersburg Petrolesport, Bremerhaven, and Vostochny Stevedoring Company. Interestingly, this innovative technology has been developed in Hamburg to allow the large container vessels to turn off their auxiliary diesel power during the lay time . Instead, the ships can draw the supplies from a new type of mobile generator that can assist in onboard operations. The renowned Technology Supplier, the Becker Marine Systems, has developed this alternate source of power after teaming up with big organizations like Hapag-Llyod and HHLA for the initial testing phase. During the test sessions, a prototype of the mobile generator has undergone several trials with a few 20,000 teu-sized vessels provided by the Hapag-Llyod. The Becker LNG PowerPac is a compact system that comprises two 40-foot containers, which generates eco-friendly power to container vessels at the HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB). On the other hand, HHLA is concentrating on how to purify the air quality in Hamburg. The 1.5-megawatt power generator is linked to a vessel’s power system and is a constant source of electricity for the on-board operations after docking is complete. During mid-August, the Mumbai Maersk had departed from the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (Malaysia) carrying a shipment weighing around 19, 038 teu. However, this achievement reflects on the imbalance prevalent between the nominal capacity of containerships and the actual volumes they are designed to carry with some of the biggest container vessels presently in service. Incidentally, the large-sized container vessels are operated by the Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) that allows a total capacity of 21,413 teu.
