ZIM ship blocked from docking claimed by Protestors in Oakland
Pro-Palestinian protestors, led by the San Francisco-based Arab Resource & Organizing Center (Aroc), have claimed victory in turning a ZIM ship away from the Port of Oakland in California. The organization’s ‘Block the Boat’ campaign aims to prevent Israeli ship operator Zim Integrated Shipping Services from docking anywhere during an ‘International Week of Action’ that will end on June 9. ZIM said that delays at Oakland were the reason for the ship’s departure. In a message to Middle East Eye, the carrier said, “Due to operational constraints and long delays in the port of Oakland, and in order to meet schedule departures in the Far East, we will be calling on other US West Coast Ports until further notice.” According to Aroc, similar protests are planned for ports in Seattle, Los Angeles and New York, as well as Vancouver, Canada. In May, members of the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union in Durban, South Africa, responded to a call from the Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions and refused to offload cargo from a ZIM ship.
PSA International Invests In Supply Chain For Multimodal Full Container Load (Fcl)/Less Than Container Load (LCL) Visibility Solution
PSA Unboxed, the start-up investor subsidiary of terminal operator PSA International, has invested in and partnered with global real-time supply chain visibility provider Roambee to co-create a verifiable item-level, multimodal full container load (FCL)/less than container load (LCL) visibility solution and ocean milestone standard backed by first-hand sensor and port operations intelligence. The tactic is different from today’s purely crowdsourced carrier, electronic logging devices (ELD), and shipping line automatic identification system (AIS) visibility aggregation as it fuses the physical and digital aspects of ocean cargo from end to end, including the first mile, at the port, on the vessel, and last mile.
Daily Hire Rates Of Container Ships Seems To Be Higher & Touching Sky
The box ship charter market is continuing its bull run, with daily hire rates in some sectors now “out of control”. It said short charters in the panamax sector were at “unprecedented levels”, citing a recent fixture for a 5,000 teu unit for 80-day employment reportedly done at between $100,000 and $145,000 a day. The current market reflects a rate of some $52,000 a day for a typical 4,000 teu panamax, however, although 10 times higher than achieved by shipowners just five years ago, the rate is hypothetical, given the dearth of open tonnage. Shipowners are looking to lock in these highly elevated rates for as long as possible, as per the Sources.
COSCO Shipping Operations Is To Be Digitized By Elon Musk’s Tesla
Chinese state-owned shipping company COSCO Group has tied up with Tesla to undertake a digital transformation, a process the leading container carrier expects to help unsnarl the mess that international logistics has become amid the Pandemic. The tie-up also calls for COSCO to share its shipping data with Tesla so the EV pioneer can put the system through its paces at a Shanghai port. Ports and logistics networks have lost much of their efficiency since the second half of 2020 as governments began introducing and tightening measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The group also needs to establish favourable ties with overseas governments and companies while also complying with Chinese government policy, a balancing act made all the more difficult as China-U.S. relations deteriorate.
APM Terminals Pipavav Resumes Container Operations
APM Terminals Pipavav (Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd) resumed container operations on Tuesday with the Port berthing Transworld Group’s– SSL Brahmaputra. The Port had resumed other landside operations from May 22 onwards, while marine side operations waited following landfall of extremely severe cyclone ‘Tauktae’. Although operations have resumed, the Port is still not on the Public utility power grid (GETCO) and is expected to recover steadily over the coming weeks. Repairs are being done in anticipation of the monsoon season and complete port recovery will take up to 3 months.
