The First Totally Emission-Free Autonomous Container Vessel Completes Its Maiden Journey

 

Over the years, the maritime industry has been striving hard towards reducing the carbon footprint of the vessels and cutting down on the harmful emissions that degrade our environment. According to the recent development in this field, the autonomous container vessel called Yara Birkeland, which is completely emission-free has successfully completed its maiden journey in the Oslo fjord. It has been decided that the emission-free vessel will start its commercial services from 2022 and will be focussed on transferring mineral fertilizer between Brevik and Porsgrunn. Needless to add, the above-mentioned ship Yara Birkeland has set forth a new milestone in the maritime arena by becoming the first self-propelled, fully electric container vessel in the entire world.

An integral part of the India-based Transworld Group and a major player in the container shipping arena, Shreyas Shipping and Logistics has bought its first bulk carrier to explore more opportunities apart from its container-based operations. Following this development, Shreyas Shipping and Logistics have sealed the deal with Doriko from South Korea for acquiring the 12-year-old handy bulk carrier by the name of Ocean Rider. The ship is all set to be renamed as TBC Badrinath and will bring up the number in the organization’s existing fleet to 12 container vessels.

Southern Europe is prepared to welcome its first all-electric ferry with zero emissions that is currently being built at Portugal. Designed by the well-known Vera Navis Naval Architects, this zero-emissions ferry is under construction and will soon start its services in Aveiro, Portugal. The ferry features an advanced battery system along with Danfoss’ Editron division marine drivetrain that also includes a fully integrated DC link system.
